This is about change, discovery and being grounded at the same time. The lines tell stories of what I saw and felt as I was drawing -- -- cautious, free, bold and lighthearted. The lines didn't always described the subject matter in the way that I thought they would. For instance, I expected all the butterflies to have the light line of the pen and ink and the tree to have a heavy line of being large and grounded.
However, I was pleased at being able to break through those boundaries, especially because breaking through boundaries was at the root of this work.
The chrysalis for me is a symbol of self birth -- -- making myself what I want to be. Each leaf and butterfly became a different way of seeing myself. Even the cutting and pasting became symbolic, for me, of constant change
I am co-founder and President Emeritus of The Rat Retreat, Inc. I love animals, particularly domestic rats, so they show up in a lot of my work. I live in the Pacific Northwest now, am southern US born and have lived in 7 states. I could easily pick up and move anywhere. I don't much care where I am as long as I can get near some water and am surrounded by trees, rats and birds. I graduated from WSU with a major in Communication and minor in Fine Art. I followed that with 2 more years of art courses at BSU and local small classes. Currently I am focused on Mixed Media Collage. Houses and rats are two current themes in my work.
