Annie was the first rescue of The Rat Retreat, a sanctuary for domestic rats. Annie was the official "greeter" of visitors and volunteers. She was so loved by everyone that she had her own birthday party with cake and gifts!
I found Annie on the sofa one day, arms wrapped around herself as if she was cold, so I took a photo and painted this from markers, using the photo as a reference.
About Dawn Boswell Burke
I am co-founder and President Emeritus of The Rat Retreat, Inc. I love animals, particularly domestic rats, so they show up in a lot of my work. I live in the Pacific Northwest now, am southern US born and have lived in 7 states. I could easily pick up and move anywhere. I don't much care where I am as long as I can get near some water and am surrounded by trees, rats and birds. I graduated from WSU with a major in Communication and minor in Fine Art. I followed that with 2 more years of art courses at BSU and local small classes. Currently I am focused on Mixed Media Collage. Houses and rats are two current themes in my work.
